The lack of snow is felt above 2000 meters leaving the ski resorts without snow. The reason ? Mild air masses from the west and southwest resulted in exceptionally high temperatures, especially in the Alps. According to MeteoSwiss, average daily temperatures for the first two days of January exceeded the 1991-2020 norm by 10 to 13°C in some regions. In Delémont, in the canton of Jura, the mercury reached more than 20°C – the highest temperature ever recorded for a January day ! We can then observe the flowering of hazelnut trees instead of sliding down the ski slopes. However, from January 16th the trend reverses and the green Alpine meadows and slushy ski slopes leaving a magnificent winter landscape. Experts are predicting more than 70 cm of fresh snow above 1’600 metres in the Swiss Alps. Indeed, a polar air coming from the North Atlantic is flowing towards central Europe bringing snow up to low altitude. In the second half of January, polar temperatures between -20 and -25°C can be observed in some regions of the Alps and the Jura. The animated image is derived from two satellites images captured with the Sentinel-2 satellites available on the Swiss Data Cube (SDC) platform. It shows the difference in snow cover between the first (4.01.2023) and the second half (24.01.2023) of January 2023 in two ski resorts, Villars and les Diablerets, located in the Alps. In the first image, we can see the ski slopes covered with artificial snow in the middle of snow-free meadows (white band in the middle of the first image). Monitoring snow cover is of crucial importance for many issues such as climate change and is on the SDC mission.

[fr] Un début d’année à demi-teinte – L’année 2023 commence avec de nouveaux records de température.
